Facing Challenges (Feb. 21 – Apr. 4, 2021)
During the 40-day season of Lent (the name comes from an old English word meaning spring, and we count the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, not counting the six Sundays in between) we are gathering around several stories from Jesus ministry in the Gospel of John. We will be using these stories of Jesus’ ministry and journey toward Jerusalem to better understand the challenges that can interrupt or overwhelm our desire to follow Jesus. Lent is traditionally a time for many Christians to give up some practice or indulgence as an offering or fast. But what stands behind this tradition is an opportunity this season gives us to grow more intentionally in our faith and discipleship.
Ash Wednesday (Joel 2:1-2, 12-17) The beginning of the season of Lent – we accept God’s invitation to join in this journey and grow in our faith
Temptation (Mark 1:9-15) Knowing that we are also “beloved” helps us fight temptations.
Commitment (Mark 8:31-38) Following Jesus demands our all.
Misguided Attempts (John 2:13-22) Sometimes, like the money changers in the temple, we go about following Jesus in the wrong way.
Exposure (John 3:14-21) The light of Jesus lays us bare, which prepares us for the healing.
Distraction (John 12:20-33) We cannot let the good distract us from the best.
Endurance (Palm/Passion Sunday) (Mark 11:1-11/15:1-47) Even Jesus could not avoid pain in this life and invites us not to turn away from our own pain or the pain of others.
Holy Thursday (John 13:1-17; 31b-35
Good Friday (John 18:1-19:42)
Believe!! (Easter Sunday) (John 20:1-8) When life seems overwhelming, God invites us to look deeper to see the face of Jesus.
The Discipleship Journey
Throughout the year, we will be focusing on different aspects of our journey of discipleship (following Jesus by living the life to which he calls us – individually and as a human community). See the outline of the plan for the year.
