The final episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood aired in 2001, so while some viewers of the film may never have watched an episode of the TV show, Mister Rogers’ cultural impact remains lasting and relevant. The show, the film, currently in theaters, and the book are built around the idea that all people deserve love, respect, and to be heard. A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD is based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred and a cynical journalist.
“What if you were friends with Mister Rogers?” How would it feel to have someone genuinely care about you to the point that you were invited to explore your past wounds, in a safe environment, so that you could experience the healing and freedom found in forgiving?
Every episode began with Mister Rogers entering his house through his door and then singing the theme song, “Won’t You be my Neighbor?” He introduced the topic for the day with a short discussion, followed the trolley to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, and finally returned to reality for a reassuring talk and the closing song “It’s such a Good Feeling.”
Each Sunday, our Sermon Series for the month will delve into several topics hit upon in the movie and book. Our feelings, our understanding others, looking and listening to them, showing our gratitude and acceptance of our differences, being able to forgive someone and seeing the good in them are all part of our being able to grow spiritually.
We have several groups including Community on Tap, who will be studying the book in February. You are welcome to join one of these groups at our upcoming Education and Volunteer fair on February 2nd in digging deeper into these topics.
We look forward to seeing you in February… and to our snowbirds who have flown south to the warmer climates, we look forward to seeing you on your return… you can always watch the services online.
