Earth Day Weekend – April 27 & 28, 2019

Mark your calendars… …for the Earth Day Weekend at Epworth, April 27 and 28. The weekend will include outdoor activities on Saturday morning, April 27 and inside activities on Sunday. On Saturday, anyone who likes to garden, is welcome to come join in the activities. There is also a group forming to cleanup Holland Glade Road. Then, from 12-noon to 6 pm, there will be Food Trucks – so, bring your appetite and lawn chair. On Sunday, April 28, there will be indoor displays and exhibitors from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, with a focus this year on “Weaning Ourselves off of Plastics”. Also on Sunday, Jennifer Biddle, an Associate Professor from the College of Earth, Ocean, & Environment at the University of Delaware will be the guest speaker at the 9:15 and 11:15 services.

Gail Gingrich will be on hand Sunday to show how reusable tote bags can be made from animal feed bags. Groups have been formed, working at the church, to assemble and sew the bags from cleaned and sterilized feed bags. Bags will also be available for sale that day.
About our speaker…
Associate Professor Jennifer Biddle’s research is focused on microorganisms in the environment, and understanding what they do and where they are. Environments she examines include local marine sediments, the deep biosphere and microbialites. Her studies examine microbial diversity at all levels, including bacteria, archaea and fungi. She employs next generation, high throughput sequencing techniques and bioinformatics, cultivation and geochemistry techniques in our studies.
